BASPCAN ‘Keeping Children Safe in an Uncertain World: Learning from Evidence and Practice’ - April 16th 2012

Dafydd Paul of Gwynedd Council’s Children and Supporting Families Service was invited to BASPCAN’s 12th National Congress in Belfast, Northern Ireland.  The Congress bought together research and practice in contemporary child protection and included contributors from the UK and Ireland.  Dafydd’s presentation focussed on Gwynedd’s work on the Risk Model.  In presenting the Model Dafydd challenged the systemic disconnection between what is expected of practitioners and what can routinely be delivered in practice.  The areas where frameworks, tools and solutions was required to bridge this included the area of assessing the threshold of significant harm.  The absence of support practice in assessing this critical threshold across the UK was noted; Dafydd explaining how the model was developed, what it aimed to address and the lessons of implementation.  Bruce Thornton joined Dafydd for questions and discussion with attendees.

Dafydd also shared this presentation at the BASPCAN’s Wales Conference ‘BASPCAN Congress - Giving something back to Wales’ on the 12th of September 2012.
